Questions to Ask Your Care Provider for Informed Decision Making

You have regular appointments with your care provider, but sometimes it can be hard to know what questions to ask or what information might be most helpful. Asking the right questions helps you understand your options, the associated risks and benefits, and allows you to take an active role in your care. Preparing a list of thoughtful questions before appointments can make a big difference in feeling supported and informed.

Here are some important questions to guide your conversations with your care provider, along with tips on why they matter and how to use the answers.

If my waters break before labour begins (PROM),

How long do you typically wait before discussing induction if there are no other concerns?

Why this matters:

Every care provider has their own approach to recommending induction after PROM. Knowing your provider’s typical timeline helps you anticipate upcoming conversations, consider your preferences, and ask informed questions. This understanding allows you to make thoughtful decisions rather than feeling rushed or pressured. Once you know their timeline, it can help you start thinking about questions regarding induction methods and alternatives to formal induction. This allows you to explore options, discuss what aligns with your preferences, and feel prepared for the decisions you may face.

What type of monitoring are you recommending for my labour, and why?

Why this matters:

Understanding the type of monitoring being recommended and the reason for it, helps you know what to expect and how to plan ahead for comfort and movement. It gives you a chance to ask about alternatives, understand when plans might change, and discuss your preferences ahead of time so you’re not making decisions under pressure. If a recommendation differs from your preferences, this allows for meaningful discussion before labour begins.

Is there anything in my birth plan that you have questions about or may not be able to accommodate?

Why this matters:

Asking this allows your care provider to clarify any hospital or practice policies that might affect your preferences. It opens a collaborative conversation where you can

discuss alternatives and ensure everyone is on the same page before labour begins. This helps prevent surprises and supports a smoother, more supported birth experience.

Making Informed Decisions Together

Good communication with your care provider means you feel heard and understood. Don’t hesitate to ask for clarification or more information if something is unclear.

  • Can you explain that again in simpler terms?

  • Are there written materials or resources I can review at home?

  • How can I reach you if I have questions between appointments?

  • Can I involve my partner or support person in these discussions?

Taking notes during your visits or bringing a trusted person can help you remember details and feel more confident in your decisions.

Pregnancy is a journey filled with many choices. Asking clear, specific questions helps you understand your care and feel empowered. Remember, your care provider is there to support you, so open communication builds trust and leads to better outcomes for you and your baby.
